Welcome to Blogging!

I never thought I would be a blogger!  Well...I wouldn't necessarily label myself as such, but I do have two blogs.  Blogging is something I have to do for my master's program and it is something that I have really grown to love.  As part of  your English 9 Honors class, I am going to ask all of you to become bloggers as well.  To start, I would like you to watch this YouTube video about blogging and leave a comment about it in the comment section of this post.

Comments can be anything really...the whole point of blogging and commenting on blogs is to get you to think about topics in a way you maybe haven't before.  So feel free to comment and question on what I write as well as what your peers write in their comments.  I can't wait to see how this goes!

  1. I have never really used a blog before. The only time I have is last year in Social Studies. However, I did not have a blog, I just had to comment on my teachers blog. Also, I never really pictured myself as someone who does a blog. I wouldn’t mind trying a blog, but I do not have anything to blog about. In the video it suggests that you can post daily updates and more. The most recent posts are shown on the front of the blog for the world to see. Also, the posts have an option for a comment section so the community can comment on your posts. Blogging can be used for any topic and you can choose themes based on what you want for your topic. On the blogs side bars can be added so you can place links and more so people have easy access to things you want them to view. Another reason blogs are useful is that they are great tools for the classroom. When you are absent it would be easy to get makeup work or homework if it is posted to the blog. Also, it helps teachers stay involved with their students outside of class time. In 6th grade my teacher had a homework blog that we could use when we were out to get homework and more resources. This was helpful because it allowed kids to catch up when they were behind. Also, it allowed our teacher to inform us about tests and quizzes before class so we could know what to expect. Another reason it could help is because it allows a common routine for classroom projects. This allows students to know what to expect for grading and to know at least some grades that will be put in for their average at the end of the quarter.

  3. I have never used a blog before, however I am excited to use a blog in class this year. I am ready to expand my horizons and try new things. By watching the video I learned a lot about blogs. I learned how you can blog your thoughts, ideas experiences and even more. Blogs are easy to use for everyone. I learned that when using a blog you could create a theme. Themes are easy to change and you can change your theme depending on what you are writing about and what kind of person you are. In addition I learned that blogs have different parts to them. There is the header, footer, side bar and finally the body. There is also a menu that links readers to different pars of your blog. People around the world use blogs to post their feelings and ideas. There is also away that you could comment on people’s blogs. When you comment you would respond to the other persons post or page. In addition there are ways that you can follow people’s blogs. In seventh grade my English teacher used a blog. She used this to tell us when some assignments were due. She also used the blog to post links to websites, and put up projects for class. Sometimes she would even have a bonus question on the blog the night before a quiz or a text. I am going to attach the link to her blog at the end of this comment if you want to take a look at it. Blogs are useful because you can post what you want for people to see. Blogs can also help you to get answers to questions that you may have. Overall I am excited to start using a blog this year in class.

  4. I've never had experience with blogs unless you count posting on social media sites such as instagram and tumblr. I feel as though blogs create a way for people to express their opinions about things going on in our world; as well as allowing people to connect with others with the same opinion. It can show how people feel about certain topics, it is easy to create and access and gets general ideas across to people. Blogs don't create harm within the internet community and can be beneficial to all if we use them. Though people can post harmful comments I think people are mature enough to voice their opinions on another's blog without fear of harming the blogger verbally. Blogs can share content on newly formed ideas coming to life, if you had a business you are more than welcome to give contact information and can hopefully have your business be known worldwide as long as internet is available. You can update and post daily and keep those around you posted on what you’ve done and what you thought of maybe a movie you went to or an event that may have happened recently. I have never had a blog so this would be a new experience for m and possibly fun to try out. Though I would only posting a comment on Mrs. Colando’s blog at request at least it isn’t posting a comment about something I have done recently because I usually don’t do anything worth talking about until the weekend, but even then it would be uninteresting. I’m glad it’s about opinions because I can see what other people in my class though about the video, or passage, etc. It was very interesting to comment on this Mrs. Colando’s blog and I’m happy to try it again.

    1. I agree that we can put our opinions out in a respectful way without harming ones opinion verbally. I think mostly everybody in our class hasn't done a blog before or posting our opinions really in regard to education. Therefore, it'll be interesting to see how everyone starts out with responding to each other.

    2. I can relate to you because I have never really used a blog and it will be a new experience for us, as well as our peers. Also, I agree that we would be able to express our opinions without trying to harm others. I will also be looking forward to using Mrs. Colando's blog.

  5. Personally, I have never written a blog before but I have commented on one before per say. Like the average kid my age in this century, I’ve used Instagram and Twitter and commented on things I like. In the 5th grade, my teacher would post things that were not educational and ask for us to respond to them. For example, I remember we had to respond to her about the Super Bowl featuring the New England Patriots and the New York Giants. However, in the 8th grade, I was required to to a “Current Event” in my Civics class on what you can consider a blog. I had to post a comment on my teacher’s blog about a given current event. I responded to my classmates and at times, it was a pain. I do like the idea of talking about my opinion on certain events and responding to my classmates and their personal opinions. Yes, at times, you can have a very strong opinion on something; and then sometimes you can have absolutely no opinion on a topic. This is why I think a required blog is a great idea. Students will be forced to think about topics or current events that they wouldn’t normally think about and then form opinions. Hopefully, things won’t get out of hand on the blog whether it be inappropriate comments or disagreement of opinions. Yet, a disagreement of opinions will be more interesting to respond to as long as they stay completely educational. I hope that Mrs. Colando’s blog will be a little bit more enjoyable to post on seeing we have an actual 7 days to think about it rather than 4 school days like I had when I was in the 8th grade. In conclusion, I hope this will be a fun add-on to our class and strike some good debates in class.

    2. I agree with the fact that in today's day and age, most people don't use the social media of a blog and it is more likely for them to use something like Twitter. So, I think that using this blog will give the entire class an oppertunity to look at a new type of social media.

    3. I agree that last years current event was a pain but I do believe that this years blog will be an improvement. Also I agree that sometimes you have strong opinions and sometimes you have no opinions. I have found myself in both these situations.

  6. This video explains very well how and when to use a blog. This video says that blogs can be made be just about anyone. people with any job or hobby can make a blog to educate others on what said person enjoys. Blogs are made up of four parts, The header that shows the title, the sidebars that have bits of information or ads. There is also the footer which includes the contact information of the blog owner or explains how the blog was made, the blog also contains the body which has the most information about the topic that the blog has been formatted to display. Blogs can be used for almost any topic or for any reason, for example a blog can be used for advertising a business or company. Blogs can also be used for education, for example a teacher could make a blog where his/her students can help each other or have a blog in which the teacher could assign work for their students to complete online. 173

  7. Upon watching this video, I felt enlightened on the subject of blogs in general. The blog taught that basically anyone, regardless of jobs or hobbies, can create a blog. Blogs can be used to display information, or to get the opinions of others. Blogs are usually made up of 4 different parts. These 4 parts include the header, the sidebars, the body, and the footer. The header usually includes the title, and in some cases the author. The sidebar includes additional apps and ways to contact the person or company that created the blog. The sidebar also includes the recent activities of the blogger. The footer of a blog can be used to display information that is not as important as the other information in the blog. More specifically, the footer can include different links such as information about the blogger or a way to contact the blogger. The body of the blog is the main part. This part of the blog displays the information that the blog is mainly about. I have a very limited experience with blogs, but I hope that I will learn more about them in this class. My limited experience is that I have been to many blogs, all of which are for school. However, in none of these blogs have I posted anything. All of my visits to these blogs have been purely for the purpose of seeing information that I needed for the class. The blogs would tell me when an upcoming quiz or test will be, or, should I become absent, what the homework and classwork was for that day.26 Even though my experience in blogging is very limited, I feel as though I can learn how to utilize a blog correctly over time. In my personal opinion, a blog is an important tool that.

  8. This video showed me some stuff that I never really thought about. I have never created a blog or commented on one before so this is all new stuff to me. I did not know that there was a specific format that most blogs followed, for example having a header, body, sidebar, and footer. Another thing I did not know was that there was a significant difference between a page and a post. Blogs are useful for trying to get another person’s opinion on something. If a link to a video is posted on the blog someone can check it out and comment how they feel about it. A blog is like an online community where everyone can give their input on something. They also show who you are and what type of person you are based on the different things that you blog about. I think that a blog will be a good thing for the class. It will allow us to access assignments from the comfort of our homes and we will be able to do them on our own time.In addition, I think this blog will be good to keep track with work if someone is ever absent from class. I do not really see any downsides with having a blog for the class. Even if we have questions on the assignment we could just comment on it and get a reply from someone. Overall a blog is a very good idea that will let us share different things with our peers and get their opinions and thoughts on it. Blogs also incorporate the ideas of technology into the classroom that are being very encouraged right now. They seem to be rising in popularity by the amount of views the video I am going to link has. It is titled “How To Make a Blog” and it has over one million views. This shows how many people want to start their own blog and let their opinion known. I look forward to being able to use a blog for the first time.

  9. I have never experienced using blogs or commented on them either.. Some of the these are new to me because I have not commented or used a blog before. Also, I did not know what blogs were supposed to be used for because I have not used one before. I never knew there was supposed to be a certain outline of a blog post such as a footer, header, sidebar, and the body and that certain tabs that are supposed to be there. I didn’t know that you can do many things on a blog such as post comments and comment on other people as well as post daily updates or assignments. Another thing that I didn’t know is that creating a blog based on a theme controls how a blog looks. Also, themes control how one’s blogs looks like and personalize your own page as well as changing your theme is easy to do. I feel like it would be easier to post on blogs because everybody would be able to see your opinion of what you and others posted and comment on it. Also, blogs could be used for linking websites or videos for others to see that was interesting to you or wanted to show something.I think a blog would be good for our class because we could do our blog posts in our own time as well as have a week to do them. We would be able to access assignments from our home and if one of us had a question and post it someone would be ready to answer it. Overall, it would be a great idea to have a blog because it would let us share our opinions with our peers as well as comment on it. Since we are in the age of technology, having a blog for a class would be a great idea and hopefully it would be enjoyable.

  10. I think the idea of blogging is a great idea for the classroom. It is going to help us share our opinions with each other on topics we are learning about in class. I like how we can comment on each other’s post in the blog. The video that talked about blogging really explained the concept to me in detail. It explained things to me that i did not even know a blog had. For example, I didn’t know blogs had things like sidebars and different pages. I like how you can format the blog to your preference. I also like how the blog is set up. To be honest, I haven’t really viewed or written a blog before. But now, I am part of a blog that i can use to share opinions on our class topics. I am looking forward to posting on the blog and viewing my classmates’ post. Having this blog will be easier to see each others thoughts. Instead of using valuable class time talking about certain topics, we can go on the blog at home and read what other people said in the comments section. I think the best part of having a classroom blog is commenting on each other's’ post. Like a majority of kids, I have commented on post on social media sites. Commenting on blogs is similar to doing that because when i comment on people's’ post, I state my opinions on what they wrote or posted online. The creation of our blog is a good way to keep our classes words on record so things can not be forgotten about. The decision to create this blog was a great decision in my personal opinion for all of the different reasons that i stated above. Here is a link to how i feel about the blog, http://www.blogsaays.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/Best-blog-article.png

  11. This is the first time that I have ever needed to use a blog for an educational purpose or to respond to something because of school, so this is fairly new to me. I have never even created my own blog or owned a blog. The closest way I have been to a blog is by going on teacher blogs to look at homework, assignments, or project/test dates. However, I think that this is a great idea for the class because then we are able to respond to things and look at what other people respond to the same thing and we can get new ideas and listen to the thoughts of our classmates. I also think that it will be fairly easy to access the blog and access certain things on the blog. After watching the blog video attached to the blog I can see how easy it is to create and manage your own blog. I also learned things about blogs that I had never thought about blogs like where it originated from or that blogs are for people to express ideas and information about certain things or topics. Also, I can tell that the school blog will help us, students, respond to certain ideas and then be able to talk to each other about something that Mrs. Colando wants us to respond to. Watching a video on what blogs are and learning details about blogs helps me understand what we will be doing better. I feel that I will be able to relate to things on the blog and will be able to learn and experience things in a different way. Blogging about certain things that deal with educational purposes and books make us respond to things and have us get a better understanding. The link below is to a website that talks about school and class blogs and I found that this is helpful.

  12. Blogs are a website in which anyone is able to express themselves in any way. It can be for school, work, or just for fun. Blogs are useful to find helpful tips and useful information on really anything you can think of whether it be how to fix something in the house or to learn how to cook something that you would not know how to cook before.. Blogs are really cool because you can customize them and do anything you want. You can change fonts and backgrounds and add different pictures. There are different blogs for different reasons. For example, there are blogs for class, like what we are doing, blogs for cooking, or even blogs about families. They are a good way to get in contact with people, or chat with people online about the things on the blog. An example of this is on a cooking blog where people share recipes with each other. I have one prior experience with a blog, and let’s just it was not pleasant. It was hours spent working on and then commenting on errelevent topics. I understand the point of blogs, and I think they could be very useful, if they are needed, rather than if the are pointless. Although I did not like that blog, I think this blog will useful, and I think it will help me to improve my writing skills. By writing on topics that are relevant and important I think that the blog will be a fun way to write about current things going on in the class. Overall, blogs are useful and cool because you can do so many different things. The coolest thing may be being able to customize and design the blog that you want. Attached is a link to a YouTube video that shows you how to customize a blog.

  13. Prior to watching the video on blogging, I thought that I had a pretty good understanding on blogs. Little did I know all that blogs could do and the features that were available. I have never been required to comment on a blog or even follow one, however it seems to be a good alternative to just writing an essay or a journal entry. Last year, my science and english teacher both had a blog, but we were never required to write on it, nor have one of our own. My teachers purposes for the blog was to just keep the class updated with the homework assignments, which made it very easy to catch up on our missed work. The video showed that blogs are a great way to share information, opinions, or even to get a conversation going on a certain topic. The video step by step showed how to make your blog visually look appealing, and how you should organize your blog in a neat and orderly way. It showed how to use proper headings and how you should organize your writing, with a body, intro, and a conclusion. I previously knew that blogs can be about all different topics such as activities, sports, recent news, and even reviews on restaurants, movies etc. I think that a blog for school would be a good and different way to learn and grasp new topics and information. Although I would not personally take time to write a blog just for fun, or on my own, I do not think that I would really mind having to post on the blog weekly. I like the idea of being able to post comments to other people’s responses, and to hear people’s feedback on my own. https://www.google.com/url?sa=i&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=images&cd=&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=0CAcQjRxqFQoTCPausOGy8sgCFcbsJgodOO0K3g&url=http%3A%2F%2Fmvs.myvirtualsolution.com%2Fresources%2Fhow-to-write-the-perfect-blog-post-format&psig=AFQjCNFZv-FQv1m31ziJ5kqx9I2-edQsjA&ust=1446576288086887 This is a link to a picture of how a blog should be formatted.

However, I also agree with Hannah that I would not do a blog of my own for fun since it is not something I particularly enjoy spending my time doing. On the other hand, blogs are very effective and without blogs many things in this world would not be shared.

  14. Blogging is posting your thoughts, ideas or experiences onto an online website. It is a good way to share your opinions and respond to others opinions. Anyone can start a blog or respond to another persons blog. People blog about a variety of topics. Some things that people blog about are current events, movies, books, shows, restaurants, and businesses. There is a blog for virtually any topic. A blog is a great way to learn about things while also seeing many different views and opinions on the topic. Blogs are a place where ideas come together. People can write about their own thoughts and also comment on others. Last year in my civics class, everyone had to comment on the teachers blog. The topics were on current events and we had to read many articles and write our opinions on them. Also we had to respond to our peers posts saying whether we agreed or disagreed with them and why. Personally I didn’t enjoy doing these blog posts because some of the topics she gave us were boring or I had no clue what they were talking about. Also most of the articles provided made no sense and didn’t thoroughly explain the topic because they were mostly made up of people's’ opinions. Doing these every week was a hassle and neither fun or educational. In my opinion blogs can be really fun and helpful or boring and useless. It all depends on what we have to write about. If it is something that I have a knowledge on then blogging and sharing my opinion is enjoyable. If i have to write about something that I was just presented with then it is boring and a struggle to make a blog post out of it. Overall i think blogging is a good, useful learning tool if the topics are interesting. If not, it can become boring and tedious.

    1. This is completely true. If I were to do something for a blog, for instance comment on it, I do not want it to feel like a chore or something that I have to do. I want a blog to be someplace where I can just share my opinion on something that I find interesting. I think that everyone can say that they learn better with a topic that is fascinating rather than one that is bland and boring.

    2. I think that you summarized the concept of blogging really well and showed that a blog can be dull and boring or can become really successful based on the topics. Also, I completely agree with you when you say that writing about something like a news article is difficult because often they are not easy to understand or biased. I was never in your history class but I completely understand what it is like to write about something that you don't get or is very uninteresting.

  15. After watching the intro to blogging video, I see the organization and simplicity of blogs. I think blogging is a good way to put your thoughts out there and allow people to read and respond to them. There are several things you can do to create a neat blog that people are attracted to. I personally like how your posts can be placed in order by date so that the viewers can get the most recent information. I think blogs are good for groups such as reading groups or for classrooms because it is easy to discuss different topics and add/locate different sources. Headers can organize your blog by breaking it into categorize making it even easier to locate information. I don not have much experience working with blogs however when I did use a blog, i liked it. I had to use a blog for my Social Studies class and that is where my teacher would put articles, resources, up and coming events, etc. Along with being easily able to gain information, blogs are a good way to communicate with people. For example, there is a soccer blog where parents comment their thoughts about coaches, player, teams, and things can get a bit out of control. But, it is still a way to connect with other parents who have the same passion as them. If i ever got involved in running a group I think creating a blog would be a smart decision. Some of my former teachers would post questions on their blogs and as an assignment we would have to respond to it on the blog. I had mixed feelings about this. ON one hand I like how easy it was, on the other hand though, I think blogs are better for quick, smaller information rather than big articles and assignments. Linked bellow is a video I found on youtube on tips on how to make your blog better.

  16. 1. I agree that blogging is as good way to get your ideas and thoughts out into the world. I also have experience in using a blog in my Social Studies class. Without knowing it, you too have blogged on social media and have more experience than you realize! I also agree that blogs should be for shorter pieces and responses rather than extremely long paragraphs or papers.

    2. I completely agree that blogging is better for smaller thoughts or ideas. I think that the posts that we write on the blog should be concentrated more on what our ideas are and not how much we write like in an essay or assessment. I really have not blogged that much before either but I agree with you when you said that blogs are great for communication but depending on who is using the blogs and what they are commenting on, things could be very successful or get out of hand.

  18. Blogs have become a huge part in the American culture. They are used to share information daily whether it be recipies, stories, news, or advice. They have also become a huge part of the education system. Last year in social studies class the students wrote a current event each week. We had to comment our thoughts on another person’s post and also write our own post with quotes embedded into the response. They would be due each Friday morning and new topic would be up Sunday night. This blog was a challenge for me since we had to write our opinions without using me or I. In the beginning of the year it was only one paragraph but honors classes were soon enough required to do two. Doing this blog has prepared me to contribute to this blog in my English 9H class. Without this blog last year I do not think that I would be as prepared to write responses on this blog. Something that may be considered as blogging that most kids do in their everyday life would be social media. Personally, I use Instagram, Twitter, and Snapchat. On Instagram you can post pictures and comment on other people’s posts. This is the style of a blog but when using the application, you do not realize that what you are doing is blogging. Twitter is similar but you also have the option of just posting text instead of text with a picture. You can reply to other and you have your own page. These applications are the updated forms of a blog. Each day, teens blog using social media apps and they do not even realize it. Whether it be through school or social media for my own personal use, I have learned more about blogs than I would have predicted.

  19. I just read through all of the comments posted so far and I appreciate all of your openness and honesty. This is also the first time I have ever attempted a class blog, so you guys are definitely the guinea pigs! Hopefully, our class blog will be a place where we can honestly express our ideas and opinions and have a bit of fun at the same time!!

  20. Link to my sister's "Food-Ventures" blog. It's full of food puns and great places to eat in Boston. It's pretty awesome tbh, hopefully the link will work: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1rLOHcJnHM2QuhvWFvWpIKXHiRJWa-awcBT5aIjpZSR0/edit?ts=563bdfb0#
Blogging is a useful tool that can be utilized both inside and outside of the classroom. A blog can be considered the body for ideas of both experts and beginners. Blogs can be used to discuss many different topics and these topics can be academic or research-related. The beauty of blogs is that not only can students and experts view each other’s ideas but they can also comment and compare them with their own. Just about everyone with internet access can see and comment on a blog so it makes conversations between bloggers effortless and avid. I have never written a blog before so this is very new to me. In past years, my teachers in both middle school and elementary school used blogs to keep my classmates and I updated on homework, tests and quizzes, as well as upcoming topics. However, the class was not encouraged to partake in the blog so I have never personally written a blog before. One year, my teacher commented the bonus questions of upcoming quizzes on it so that we would regularly check it. Not to in any way disrespect this teacher or her class, but I did not particularly think this system was effective because often times the questions did not relate to what we were working on in class. For example, on one quiz she asked what color the blog was on a certain day. I did not personally enjoy using this blog or checking it because I did not feel like I was learning anything particularly important or new besides what color background her blog was or a bonus question about a character or event that was not significant to the plot. My Italian teacher the following year took a different approach and used her blog regularly to post videos, photos and occasionally an Italian news article relating to a topic we were working on in class. I could tell she put a lot of effort into her blog posts when she showed them to us in class. Unfortunately, I always forgot it was there and never fully took advantage of it. I think that it is important to find the happy-medium in terms of how often students should be checking the blog. Writing a new post once a week for the purpose of responding to a concept in class should work out very well for us but since this is the first time we are trying in this class, we will most likely make changes as we go along. A vital factor in writing a blog, in my opinion, is to keep the class engaged and willing to contribute to the conversation without it feeling like a chore. I have faith that we will be able to accomplish this since we’ve already had several great discussions during class and I think these insightful conversations will translate to the blog well.

  21. A blog is a place where a person can place their own thoughts, opinions, ideas etc, it enables you to share your feelings and give advice. There are four parts to a blog, those being; the header, the footer, the body, and the side bar. There can also be different pages to your blog, a page is a place where you might find an 'about me' or any contact information. A page is not to be confused with a post which is mainly what blogs are made of. Posts are the most important part of your blog, they contain information about the topic of your blog. For example, say you had a cooking blog, you would probably post new recipes or some tips about making a certain meal. I’ve seen a blog before but didn’t really know what went into making a blog nor the parts of one. I’ve never blogged before but I think a class blog is a great idea and I’m interested in seeing the results.
